Governor Huckabee and Congressman Ron Paul on Health Care

I listened to the Presidential Debate in January 2008 and comments by Governor Huckabee and Congressman Ron Paul caught my attention.

Governor Huckabee said, "Ours is not a health care system, ours is a disease care system. Ours is not a disease prevention system, ours is a disease intervention system".

Congressman Ron Paul said, "Our people are going to India to get heart surgeries performed. They pay for the tickets, hotels and still get the surgery done at half the price."

Bixby Letter - Saving Private Ryan

Executive Mansion,
Washington, Nov. 21, 1864.

Dear Madam,

I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle.

I feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save.

I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom.

Yours, very sincerely and respectfully,

A. Lincoln

Eating Preserved Meats?

Nitrates (also called Nitrites) is a preservative and used to set color in food. Nitrates and Nitrites form Nitrosamines in the body. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic.

I read somewhere that Germany banned the use of nitrates.

Most preserved meats contain nitrates. This includes foods that are typically pink in color like bologna, salami, pepperoni, hotdogs, corned beef, pastrami, bacon, and cured ham.

The Good Nut

Read this article in a local newspaper in which a Cleveland Clinic doctor had a list of top 10 recommended snacks. Coming in at number one was Walnuts. Why? Because of the Omega 3 fatty acid content in them. There is also a study published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology that support this idea. Of course, I did get a huge packet of walnuts from Sam's Club, for about 10 bucks, after reading this article.

Virgin olive oil is another similar healthy item to include in diet. One can't tell what kind of cooking oil is used in any food service business. Virgin olive oil is more expensive than other types of cooking oil but is probably more than worth the little bit extra money.
